Minnesota to Pay Homeowners to Make Their Lawns Bee-Friendly

By Emma Fiala

Minnesota’s Legislature just approved a spending plan that would set aside $900,000 over one year to assist homeowners in turning their lawns into bee-friendly habitats. That’s right—the state of Minnesota wants to pay residents to make their lawns better for bees.

The plan aims to replenish the food source of the rusty patched bumble bee—a fuzzy and fat bee on the brink of extinction—though it will be beneficial to pollinators of all shapes and sizes.

Available funds will cover some of the costs associated with transitioning a traditional grass lawn into one full of wildflowers like creeping thyme, self-heal, ground plum and dandelions, as well as clovers and grasses native to the area.

“When people look at these flowers, they see a nuisance, they see a weed. I see a forage for pollinators,” James Wolfin, a graduate student working at the University of Minnesota’s Bee Lab, said.

“A pound of Dutch white clover is about $7 and it grows low enough that people wouldn’t even have to change the way they mow their lawn,” Wolfin said. As many as 55 of Minnesota’s 350 species of bees have been observed snacking on Dutch white clover, “so just by not treating white clover like a weed and letting it grow in a yard provides a really powerful resource for nearly 20% of the bee species in the state,” Wolfin added.

Research at the university has shown how important bumblebees are to the Upper Midwest. Unbeknownst to most people, these bees vibrate in a frequency close to a middle C note and, when sitting on a flowering plant, this vibration unlocks pollen that other insects would have otherwise been unable to reach.

Under the plan, 75% of the cost of converting a traditional lawn to a bee-friendly one will be reimbursed by the state of Minnesota’s Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR), with up to 90% of the cost covered in areas considered to have a “high potential” to support the rusty patched bee.

The new law was buried within the state’s omnibus Environment bill and is awaiting Governor Tim Walz’s signature. And while an earlier version of the plan would have provided funds for a three year program, the pared down version is a step in the right direction nonetheless.

Even though the funds won’t be available until 2020, locals are already excited at the prospect. State Representative Kelly Morison, who introduced the bill, said:

I have gotten a ton of emails and so much feedback from people who are interested in this. People are really thinking about how they can help.

It is not yet known how and when residents will be able to apply for the program. According to BWSR spokeswoman Mary July, officials are still putting together the program’s specifics.

Researchers Turn Plastic Water Bottles Into Diesel and Jet Fuel

A research group led by Washington State University scientists has found a way to turn daily plastic waste products into jet fuel.

In a new paper published in the journal Applied Energy, WSU’s Hanwu Lei and colleagues melted plastic waste at high temperature with activated carbon, a processed carbon with increased surface area, to produce jet fuel.

“Waste plastic is a huge problem worldwide,” said Lei, an associate professor in WSU’s Department of Biological System Engineering. “This is a very good, and relatively simple, way to recycle these plastics.”

How it works

In the experiment, Lei and colleagues tested low-density polyethylene and mixed a variety of waste plastic products, like water bottles, milk bottles, and plastic bags, and ground them down to around three millimeters, or about the size of a grain of rice.

The plastic granules were then placed on top of activated carbon in a tube reactor at a high temperature, ranging from 430 degree Celsius to 571 degrees Celsius. That’s 806 to 1,060 Fahrenheit. The carbon is a catalyst, or a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without being consumed by the reaction.

“Plastic is hard to break down,” Lei said. “You have to add a catalyst to help break the chemical bonds. There is a lot of hydrogen in plastics, which is a key component in fuel.”

Once the carbon catalyst has done its work, it can be separated out and re-used on the next batch of waste plastic conversion. The catalyst can also be regenerated after losing its activity.

After testing several different catalysts at different temperatures, the best result they had produced a mixture of 85 percent jet fuel and 15 percent diesel fuel.

Environmental impact

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, landfills in the U.S. received 26 million tons of plastic in 2015, the most recent year statistics are available. China has recently stopped accepting plastic recycling from the U.S. and Canada. Conservative estimates by scientists say that at least 4.8 million tons of plastic enters the ocean each year worldwide.

Not only would this new process reduce that waste, very little of what is produced is wasted.

We can recover almost 100 percent of the energy from the plastic we tested,” Lei said. “The fuel is very good quality, and the byproduct gasses produced are high quality and useful as well.”

He also said the method for this process is easily scalable. It could work at a large facility or even on farms, where farmers could turn plastic waste into diesel.

“You have to separate the resulting product to get jet fuel,” Lei said. “If you don’t separate it, then it’s all diesel fuel.”

A Philippines Cafe Makes Straws From Coconut Leaves As A Perfect Alternative To Plastic Straws

By Mayukh Saha

Neil Armstrong said, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”.  Of course, he was talking about the Moon landing. But considering the present condition our society is in, it could very well apply to us. With the continuous influx of pollutants into our environment, it is high time we take teeny tiny steps ourselves to some solution. It might go a long way towards helping the environment.

And us.

According to a report in 2016, 40 kg of plastic is produced for each of the 7 billion humans every year. It’s no mystery that it will grow. And because of that hundreds and thousands of marine animals continue to fall victim to gruesome deaths.

Plastics are non-biodegradable substances which take centuries to decompose. They clog the throats of marine animals leading to them choking and dying. They also contain harmful chemicals that make the soil infertile for future cultivation.

While plastic straws are not the main contributors to plastic pollution, Americans still use around 500 million straws daily. And at least 8 billion plastic straws end up on beaches globally. Also, plastic straws do comprise 4% of the total plastic waste, which is not negligible.

And that’s why small changes tend to matter a lot.

In the Philippines, the manager of Café Editha in Surigao Del Norte, Sarah Tiu, has chosen to go down the non-plastic route. She never liked plastic anyway. At first, she tried using stainless straws and paper straws to replace plastic straws. Well – the customers weren’t fans of the alternatives. She had to find some other way.

When she went on a trip down to Corregidor Island, she found a way to transform her eco-friendly ideas into action, without causing dissatisfaction among customers. There she learned how to use natural products like cut lukay and fresh buko to make straws. Lukay is coconut fronds and leaves while buko is coconut juice.

Once she learned to make these ‘natural’ straws, her idea was to implement it in her cafe. And she did so. The customers loved it. They started sharing the news, along with pictures, on social media. These straws were biodegradable, but the best part, they did not make any sounds and were leakproof. Customer satisfaction guaranteed!

The straws are easy to make and Tiu has shared pictures of these straws to encourage others to adopt them. She makes them with her workers’ assistance before the store opens in the morning.

Mass Meditation Leads to More Societal Peace, New Study Shows

Researchers find group meditation can positively impact society.

The group practice of the Transcendental Meditation® and TM-Sidhi® programs in Cambodia between 1993 and 2008 was associated with a 96.2% decline in sociopolitical violence in that war-torn country compared to violence in the preceding three years, according to a new peer-reviewed study published in Studies in Asian Social Science.

According to the study, the likelihood that this reversal in the rising 1990-1992 trend of violence occurred randomly was one chance in 10 million, suggesting that meditation can indeed have a coherence-creating effect on society.

Effect recognized by government officials

“Maharishi Vedic University was established by Maharishi in Cambodia on January 1, 1993, for the declared purpose of bringing peace and prosperity to Cambodia,” said study author Lee Fergusson. “The positive influence of the MVU meditating groups was recognized by officials of the Cambodian government.”

The late King Norodom Sihanouk was quoted as saying, “Maharishi Vedic University is playing an important role in human resource development and in [the] restoration of peace and expansion of prosperity throughout the country.”

Up to 1,250 students participated

The reduction in violence began in January 1993, when more than 550 students began practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique together twice daily in a group at Maharishi Vedic University in Cambodia. Also, 100-200 students practiced the TM-Sidhi program together twice a day in a group as part of their Consciousness-BasedSM education curriculum starting in 1994.

Across three MVU campuses, up to 1,250 students contributed to increased coherence in collective consciousness through their daily group Transcendental Meditation practice during 1993-2008.

The study is the first to use an explanatory mixed-methods research design to explore the growth of social coherence using time series analysis and qualitative content analysis of news articles. The researchers analyzed monthly data on the level of sociopolitical violence obtained from automated content-analysis of news reports performed by a leading independent research organization.

Other research shows reduced poverty

Other published research by Dr. Fergusson, professor and founding director of Maharishi Vedic Research Institute, Australia, documents the dramatic economic and social transformation of Cambodia after the founding of MVU.

In 1990, Cambodia, devastated by decades of war, was the poorest country in the world. After establishment of MVU, Cambodia’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth rates averaged 8.9%, and poverty was reduced by 63% between 1994 and 2008. By 2010 Cambodia was ranked 63rd out of 152 countries on the international scale of poverty, an unprecedented jump of 89 places in less than one generation.

Homeschoolers Sleep Better and Eat Healthier Than Normies

Study finds better sleep, diet habits help homeschoolers counter shortfalls in formal exercise. Homeschoolers see no added health risks over time.

Years of home-schooling don’t appear to influence the general health of children, according to a Rice University study.

A report by Rice kinesiology lecturer Laura Kabiri and colleagues in the Oxford University Press journal Health Promotion International puts forth evidence that the amount of time a student spends in home school is “weakly or not at all related to multiple aspects of youth physical health.”

“Although there may be differences in the health of elementary through high school home-schoolers, those differences don’t seem to change with additional time spent in home school,” Kabiri said. “In other words, staying in home school longer isn’t related to increased health benefits or deficits.”

Earlier this year Kabiri and her Rice team reported that home-schooled students who depended on maintaining physical fitness through outside activities were often falling short.

The flip side presented in the new report should come as good news to parents and students. The study was conducted by Kabiri and colleagues at Texas Woman’s University and the University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHealth) at San Antonio.

The results from studies of more than 140 children in grades kindergarten through 5, who were tested against statistically normal data for children of their age and gender, accounted for prior published research that showed home-schooled children have less upper-body and abdominal muscle strength and more abdominal fat when compared to public school students. Additional studies also showed that home-schooling benefited sleep patterns, overall body composition and diet.

However, to the researchers’ surprise, these differences in home-schooler health did not appear to be affected either way by increased time in home school.

“Body composition can relate to sleep as well as diet,” Kabiri said. “And as far as muscular health goes, these kids are still active. We’re not saying there’s not an upfront benefit or detriment to their health, but after an initial gain or loss, there aren’t additional gains or losses over time if you’re going to home-school your children for one year or their entire careers. The relationship between their health and the time they spend in home school seems to be irrelevant.”

Pregnant Women Living Near Fracking Wells Have Higher Concentrations of Metals

Study reveals pregnant women who live near fracking sites had 16 times more aluminum, 10 times more manganese, 6 times more strontium, and 3 times more barium in their bodies.

The Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology last week revealed the findings of a 2016 pilot study that measured pregnant women’s exposure to environmental contaminants in northeastern British Columbia, an area of intensive natural-gas production through hydraulic fracturing (fracking).

The study, directed by Marc-André Verner, a professor at the School of Public Health (ESPUM) of Université de Montréal (UdeM), showed that the women had higher concentrations of some metals, especially barium, aluminium, strontium and manganese, in their hair and urine compared to the general population.

“These results are of concern because a previous study showed that relatively high concentrations of barium, aluminium, strontium and manganese are found in rock samples from B.C.’s Montney Formation, where natural gas is extracted via fracking,” said Élyse Caron-Beaudoin, a post-doctoral researcher at EPSUM and the study’s lead author. “In addition, recent studies analyzing wastewater from fracking generally have shown higher concentrations of the same metals.”

“It’s impossible to say with certainty whether fracking caused the women’s exposure to these metals,” she added, “but our study does provide further evidence that this could be the case.”

Community-initiated studies

Initially requested by people living near the natural-gas production areas, the study was jointly launched by UdeM researchers and the region’s First Nations and public-health authorities. These communities wanted clear answers about how living near natural-gas developments was affecting their health.

“We used data from the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) to compare trace metal concentrations in the urine and hair of the 29 pregnant women we studied versus the general population,” said Caron-Beaudoin. “However, for some metals we had to use exposure data collected in France, because similar data has never been collected in sufficient quantity in Canada.”

The researchers found that concentrations of manganese in the women’s urine were 10 times higher than in the reference populations. As well, the women’s hair had greater concentrations of aluminium (16 times higher), barium (three times higher) and strontium (six times higher) than in the reference populations in France. Furthermore, barium and strontium concentrations were higher in hair samples from indigenous participants than in those from non-indigenous participants.

Is there a health risk?

At this stage of their investigations, researchers cannot comment on the presence or absence of a risk to human health. Many essential data for this type of toxicological evaluation are still lacking, including epidemiological studies assessing the association between exposure of pregnant women to these trace metals and the adverse effects on children’s health: “We are aware that people would like to have answers right away, but we are only at the beginning of a long process of scientific inquiry,” said Caron-Beaudoin. “Other studies are already underway or being planned to clarify this legitimate issue.”

Pending questions

Data on water quality in the study areas’s Peace River Valley remains scarce and the data that has been collected to date is highly variable. In addition, there’s no systematic water-monitoring program in the region.

A previous study on exposure to volatile organic compounds such as benzene in the same group of pregnant women was published in 2018 in Environment International. Its findings suggested benzene exposure is also potentially higher among study participants, especially indigenous women, than in the general Canadian population.

To learn more, Caron-Beaudoin has returned to the Peace River Valley to recruit a second group of pregnant women so the researchers can measure their exposure to different contaminants. She and her team will also measure concentrations of these contaminants in water and indoor air. In addition, years as part of an epidemiological study, they are assessing the overall health of babies born in the region over the last 10 years.

Article by University of Montreal. About this study:”Urinary and hair concentrations of trace metals in pregnant women from Northeastern British Columbia, Canada: a pilot study,” by Élyse Caron-Beaudoin et al., was published in the online version of the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology in May 2019.

How Are We Being Poisoned; Let Us Count The Ways

By Catherine J. Frompovich

Poison! What is the definition?

According to Dictionary online,

a substance that is capable of causing the illness or death of a living organism when introduced or absorbed.

According to MedicineNet online,

Poison: Any substance that can cause severe organ damage or death if ingested, breathed in, injected into the body or absorbed through the skin.

[Aren’t vaccines injected?]

Poisoning probably is the favorite ‘game’ control freaks enjoy playing since, in most cases, those being poisoned don’t recognize the problem until it’s too late, like with weather geoengineering now. They ain’t contrails! However, the poison practice probably has been ongoing ever since time immemorial.

Nevertheless, the ‘game’ changed dramatically when “old man” John D. Rockefeller decided in the early 1900s to create a new industry [1-2], which would do just that: Invent, patent, manufacture and sell chemicals that would be sold legally as “medicines but with implementing an apparent sub-culture of causing ancillary diseases by either adverse reactions, or even death!

Yet, in 2013, an estimated 128,000+ prescription drug takers died from adverse drug reactions.

This means that prescription drugs almost rival stroke in terms of overall casualties.

Source: https://www.green-flower.com/articles/602/here-s-how-many-people-die-from-legal-drugs

Rockefeller’s game plan was enhanced further at the end of World War II when the United States offered Hitler’s “poison specialists” the opportunity under Project Paperclip [3-4] to come to the USA avoiding prosecution to create similar poisons for the U.S. government. Unbelievable, but true—and no one in Congress had the ‘gonads’ to oppose that program, unless, of course, it was funded under black ops or as part of the then-evolving Deep State and Shadow Government agendas, which Congress has no control over.

Fluoride/Fluoridation of municipal water systems

One of the first mass-citizen-poisonings under the guise of improving dental health was the introduction of fluoride, a protoplasmic poison [5], into public and municipal water systems in the 1960s. [6] Fluoride: How A Toxic Poison Ended Up In Our Water Supply.

After all these years, plus independent scientific research documenting fluoride’s ability to reduce IQs [7], By 2006, 69.2% of the U.S. population on public water systems were receiving fluoridated water” [8], we’re still being poisoned by fluoride.

1976 Trade Secrets Act

That federal law began the slippery slope slide to being able not to report certain ‘ingredients’, since they were regarded as “trade secrets,” but allowed the ‘hiding’ of chemicals, which made products with patents available. The Act has been revised over the years; however, it began an ‘accepted practice’ regarding secret chemicals, in my opinion.

National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act

The National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act (NCVIA) of 1986 (42 U.S.C. §§ 300aa-1 to 300aa-34.

This “get out of jail free” act provided Big Pharma with total exonerations at law for product liability adverse reactions regarding vaccines/vaccinations. Talk about bailout! It probably began the downfall of U.S. children’s health status during the ensuing years since hundreds of vaccines are being produced without independent, non-vested-interests ‘science’ publically being made available to consumers and intended vaccinees regarding the neurotoxic ingredients and chemicals in vaccines, which now are becoming government mandatory!

U.S. children’s health went from one in 10,000-15,000 Autism cases in the 1970s, to one in 59 nationally, and one in 34 in New Jersey [9]. U.S. has higher death rates for newborns than other rich countries [10], but also the highest number of vaccines given in the first year of life [11]!

Check out the neurotoxins and other chemicals in vaccines here.

Global Weather Geoengineering Toxic Poisons

Even though the above goes by many names, including Solar Radiation Management (SRM) [12], it is explained more intricately by Dane Wigington of

Geoengineering Watch Global Alert News, May 18, 2019,

https://youtu.be/RXsDfuuQPsw?t=4

Check out 50 minutes on the timeline to learn the toxic chemicals being rained down from the man-made clouds created under SRM, which were verified by lab tests inflight April 29, 2019.

Weather Geoengineering, also known as “climate change” is the most dangerous of all poison attacks upon the ecosystem, humans, wildlife and the environment, yet it goes on daily; just look to the skies above to see horrendous clouds full of microwave energies and toxic chemicals creating either drought, fires or daily torrential rainstorms, which interfere with agriculture and food production. See “Is Global Famine On Dinner Plates After Autumn 2019 Courtesy of Weather Geoengineering?”.

Genetically Modified ‘Phoods’ and Glyphosate

Even though food additives, preservatives, irradiation, etc. have been around for decades, nothing matches the insanity of GM phoods and seeds, which, in most cases, have to be cultivated using Roundup®, Monsanto’s killer herbicide, now owned by Bayer Pharmaceuticals. It’s not safe to drink as many would have consumers believe, thus propelling the weed killer herbicide into over one thousand lawsuits-in-waiting for causing Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Glyphosate was first synthesized in 1950 by Swiss chemist Henry Martin, who worked for the Swiss company Cilag. The work was never published.[14]:1Stauffer Chemical patented the agent as a chemical chelator in 1964 as it binds and removes minerals such as calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper, and zinc.[15]

Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glyphosate

Almost everything not organically grown is contaminated by glyphosate, especially during what’s called pre-crop-harvest staging. See “Preharvest Staging Guide.”

“Glyphosate Contaminates the Global Ecosystem: The Damning New PAN Report” (Oct. 18, 2016)

“Glyphosate” Report [N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine]

How much glyphosate is used globally?

Glyphosate is the most used herbicide in human history: 3.5 Billion pounds (1.6 Billion Kilograms) sprayed across America since 1974. 18.9 Billion pounds (8.6 Billion Kilograms) sprayed worldwide since 1974. [13]

Electromagnetic Frequencies, Radio Frequencies, Wi-Fi and 5G

How did EMFs, RFs, Wi-Fi and 5G get involved in this article, when they are not chemicals? Good question!

The simple answer is they are electromagnetic energies for which consumers, in general, really don’t know what damage they do. Any RF frequency, especially on the higher end of the spectrum, i.e., millimeter waves as 5G, which is known for heating the body like it’s on fire when used in military weaponry and crowd control, has to be causing some sort of adverse effects when they bombard humans continuously 24/7/365! And from every modern money saving electrical product, especially AMI Smart Meters, cell phones, Wi-Fi and the forthcoming ‘high tech disaster in the making’—5G.

If exposure to cell phones and computers causes a blood reaction known as rouleaux, as seen in the video below, we have to wonder what EMFs really can do. Do they set us up for breaks in our DNA? Double-strand DNA breaks lead to cancer!

Nuclear Energy and Power

Electric power plants using nuclear energy are not as emissions-free, ecologically-safe, as we are led to believe. Those cooling towers actually can emit some RADs! Check out the chart in the link below.

Not only nuclear power plants emit radioactive substances with the exhaust air, Fossil fuels contain various concentrations of natural radioactive substances which are released during combustion.”

Radiation exposure, power plants. Not only nuclear power plants emit radioactive substances with the exhaust air. Fossil fuels contain various concentrations of natural radioactive substances which are released during combustion.

Source: https://www.euronuclear.org/info/encyclopedia/r/radiation-exposure-power-plants.htm

The farther away from a nuclear power plant you can live and work, the better. However, I find it interesting that most nuclear power stations are situation near large cities. What were they thinking?

Recently, Exelon announced it was decommissioning its Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant, the first U.S. nuclear accident in the State Capitol area, Harrisburg, since the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania wouldn’t ‘bail it out’. Who is going to be monitoring it for how many thousands of years? Will it have the potential of poisoning local ground and well water?

I have covered what I consider the most egregious poison assaults on the citizens of the United States.

I’m certain there are more readers can point to, i.e., formaldehyde in everything, just about, including vaccines. However, what I hope this exercise shows is that our federal ABC agencies may, and probably are not, functioning in consumers’ best interests.

Those agencies are caught up in what I claim is the Corporatocracy governance mode and we are paying the price for legislators and bureaucrats collusionary actions.

Scientists Say Babies Will Grow In Artificial Wombs Within Ten Years

By John Vibes

The abortion debate is once again taking center stage in US politics, and the prospect of artificial wombs is slowly becoming a part of the conversation, as the technology is actually starting to become a reality. According to some experts in the field, we are just a decade away from this type of technology reaching the public.

Dr. Carlo Bulletti, associate professor at Yale University’s obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive science department, has predicted that a fully functioning artificial womb could be used in the medical field in the next ten years.

Scientists call this Ectogenesis, which is an artificial pregnancy outside of the body. Numerous experiments have tested this process with animals and have been slowly advancing the success rates of the procedure. In the most notable of these experiments, a premature lamb was kept alive for weeks in an artificial womb.

Study: Artificial womb technology and the frontiers of human reproduction: conceptual differences and potential implications

There are still concerns about how a pregnancy like this would impact the health and mental development of the baby, considering the importance of bonding, but many experts insist that artificial births are the future.

In a recent interview with Metro, Dr. Anna Smajdor, associate professor of practical philosophy at the University of Oslo, explained that bonding can happen mentally, but did not address whether or not this could cause developmental issues for the baby.

“Many arguments have been made about the necessity of gestation and childbirth for bonding. Although it may be true that the physical closeness between mother and baby facilitate bonding, it is certainly not true that it is necessary for bonding. If it were, fathers would have no claim to be bonded with their children. Not just this, but it is becoming increasingly clear that traumatic births actually impede maternal bonding, rather than the other way round,” Smajdor said.

“With developments in technology, increasingly, parents describe the moments of special bonding as being when they see the first scans. So this seems to imply that it is a visual connection that is regarded as being important rather than the physical one per se. Ectogenesis could actually facilitate this kind of visual bonding,” she added.

In an article for Wired, Tech writer Matt Chessen said that people in the future will find traditional pregnancy unappealing.

“Most future folk will find pregnancy – especially the delivery of an infant through a birth canal – messy and risky,’ technologist and author Matt Chessen wrote in Wired. ‘Creating a baby inside another human being is hazardous. The child’s health is dependent on the mother’s physical security as she navigates the world, and the fetus is susceptible to infections, poor nutrition, and other threats.” Chessen said.

Some researchers in the field have been even bolder than Bulletti with their predictions.

Last year, academic Elizabeth Chloe Romanis wrote in the BMJ’s Journal Of Medical Ethics that, “It seems probable that we are only several years away from testing on human subjects.”

Dr. Alan Flake, of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which carried out the most famous Ectogenesis experiment, believes that we could be just a year or two away from seeing this technology in FDA trials.

“We’re in the process of interacting with the [US Food And Drug Administration] FDA, so it’s not impossible that we could be doing a clinical trial one to two years from now,” Flake said.

This strange technology seems like something out of a dystopian film, but it could possibly provide a solution for women with health problems who still want to have children, and it could also make the abortion debate much more interesting in years to come. Although, even if there was an artificial way to continue a pregnancy outside of the body, this would not guarantee that there would be enough qualified parents to raise the children that resulted from all of these additional pregnancies.

Natural Compound in Broccoli Suppresses Cancer Tumor Growth

By Jacqueline Mitchell

Your mother was right; broccoli is good for you. Long associated with decreased risk of cancer, broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables – the family of plants that also includes cauliflower, cabbage, collard greens, Brussels sprouts and kale – contain a molecule that inactivates a gene known to play a role in a variety of common human cancers. In a new paper published today in Science, researchers, led by Pier Paolo Pandolfi, MD, PhD, Director of the Cancer Center and Cancer Research Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, demonstrate that targeting the gene, known as WWP1, with the ingredient found in broccoli suppressed tumor growth in cancer-prone lab animals.

“We found a new important player that drives a pathway critical to the development of cancer, an enzyme that can be inhibited with a natural compound found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables,” said Pandolfi. “This pathway emerges not only as a regulator for tumor growth control, but also as an Achilles’ heel we can target with therapeutic options.”

A well-known and potent tumor suppressive gene, PTEN is one of the most frequently mutated, deleted, down-regulated or silenced tumor suppressor genes in human cancers. Certain inherited PTEN mutations can cause syndromes characterized by cancer susceptibility and developmental defects. But because complete loss of the gene triggers an irreversible and potent failsafe mechanism that halts proliferation of cancer cells, both copies of the gene (humans have two copies of each gene; one from each parent) are rarely affected. Instead, tumor cells exhibit lower levels of PTEN, raising the question whether restoring PTEN activity to normal levels in the cancer setting can unleash the gene’s tumor suppressive activity.

To find out, Pandolfi and colleagues identified the molecules and compounds regulating PTEN function and activation. Carrying out a series of experiments in cancer prone mice and human cells, the team revealed that a gene called WWP1 – which is also known to play a role in the development of cancer – produces an enzyme that inhibits PTEN’s tumor suppressive activity. How to disable this PTEN kryptonite? By analyzing the enzyme’s physical shape, the research team’s chemists recognized that a small molecule – formally named indole-3-carbinol (I3C), an ingredient in broccoli and its relatives – could be the key to quelling the cancer causing effects of WWP1.

When Pandolfi and colleagues tested this idea by administering I3C to cancer prone lab animals, the scientists found that the naturally occurring ingredient in broccoli inactivated WWP1, releasing the brakes on the PTEN’s tumor suppressive power.

But don’t head to the farmer’s market just yet; first author Yu-Ru Lee, PhD, a member of the Pandolfi lab, notes you’d have to eat nearly 6 pounds of Brussels sprouts a day – and uncooked ones at that – to reap their potential anti-cancer benefit. That’s why the Pandolfi team is seeking other ways to leverage this new knowledge. The team plans to further study the function of WWP1 with the ultimate goal of developing more potent WWP1 inhibitors.

“Either genetic or pharmacological inactivation of WWP1 with either CRISPR technology or I3C could restore PTEN function and further unleash its tumor suppressive activity,” said Pandolfi. “These findings pave the way toward a long-sought tumor suppressor reactivation approach to cancer treatment.”

Edible Film Made from Essential Oils Can Protect Food Better Than Plastic

By Amanda Froelich

If you’re looking to reduce your carbon imprint without really changing your lifestyle, this edible film may be one of the available solutions to doing so. According to new research published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, a newly-developed edible film containing the essential oils clove and oregano may protect food better than conventional plastic film.

The study was led by researchers from the Department of Food Technology at the Federal University of Vicosa. The team recognized the need for a sustainable film to protect food. They also know of the oils’ antimicrobial properties and theorized that they could be embedded into food packaging. It turns out they were right.

By using low-speed mixing and ultrasonication techniques, the team was able to form coarse emulsions and nanoemulsions of both clove bud (Syzygium aromaticum) and oregano (Origanum vulgare). Afterward, they added methylcellulose, a type of edible fiber, to create the film sheets.

Then they conducted an experiment. Two preservative-free loaves of bread were baked—one was covered with the edible film and the other with conventional plastic film. After 15 days, the researchers noted that the bread covered with the edible film had marked reduction in both yeast and mold counts, likely due to the smaller-sized particles providing more enhanced protection.

All in all, it was concluded that the film made with essential oils maintained the bread’s freshness for longer than the calcium propionate and plastic version. This is an important find, as natural treatments are often considered to be inferior to conventional ones.

“Both essential oils reduced the rigidity and increased the extensibility of the methylcellulose films, effects that were even more pronounced for nanodroplets,” the researchers wrote. “Both essential oils lessened the counts of yeasts and molds in sliced bread during 15 days, and droplet size reduction provided a further improvement in antimicrobial properties.”

It is also worth noting that the edible film is much healthier than plastic film because it does not contain chemical preservatives to extend the shelf life of food. These chemicals can leach into the food they’re supposed to be protecting and have been linked to health conditions. It is for this reason experts recommend you store your to-go lunch and leftovers in ceramic, stainless steel, and glass containers.

“Leachables from plastics can include everything from leftover monomer building blocks to additives used to make plastic strong or malleable,” explains a report by Chemical & Engineering News, which is published by the American Chemical Society (ACS). “Probably the most infamous leachable from plastics is bisphenol A (BPA), which is used as a building block in polycarbonate bottles and in the epoxy-resin liners of metal cans.”

It is presently unknown if or when this product will be available in markets, but if it were available in your city right now, would you use this edible film? Comment your thoughts below and share this news!
